Senator Kamala Harris has a “birther” problem. She may not be eligible for president because she’s not a “natural born citizen.” The left-leaning media has their propaganda machine working overtime, trying to spin the issue and cover it up through misdirection.
Harris has the same basic problem as Barack Obama and Ted Cruz, though each of them run afoul of the law in different ways.
Obama never did show an “authentic” birth certificate to prove he really was born in Hawaii, even though he got away with the forgery he presented as a PDF file.
Cruz was born in Canada but his mother was a U.S. citizen. Kamala Harris was born in the U.S.A but neither of her parents was a citizen. Until the Supreme Court settles the question once and for all, the issue will stay in limbo. At least, as far as both Cruz and Harris are concerned.
The network media begins by confronting the issue head on. “The birthers are back — this time for Kamala Harris” one July 7 headline at the Philadelphia Tribune declares. Then they totally ignore the real issue and replace it with one they have an answer to.
“Just as the original birthers rose up in 2008 to raise what turned out to be bogus questions about Barack Obama’s birth certificate, new birthers appeared online after presidential candidate Kamala Harris’ impressive Democratic debate performance Thursday to question whether she’s really black.”
Black? Where did that come from? It was simply a question they could answer. One that neatly sidesteps the issue of citizenship.
“‘Kamala Harris is implying she is descended from American Black Slaves,’ said the tweet posted by Ali Alexander, a rising figure in a hive of right-wing media personalities. ‘She’s not. She comes from Jamaican Slave Owners. That’s fine. She’s not an American Black. Period.'”
Then come the fact checkers. The couple and their cat over at Snopes were quick to squash the conservative critics at Truthbits. Probably because the far-right website is such an easy target. They don’t care as much for backing up their allegations as getting clicks.
Truthbit started circulating what is allegedly a copy of Harris’ birth certificate with a couple lines of text.
“Unless proven with court documents, at the time of Kamala’s birth, her parents were not U.S. citizens. They were foreign students. At the time of her birth, she was the daughter of non-citizens. This makes her an anchor baby. She is not eligible to hold the office of president.”
That statement is about as solid as it gets. Yes, it is simply their “opinion” that she’s not eligible but until the Supreme Court makes a ruling, nobody can prove them wrong either.
They go on to demand: “Where are her papers to prove CITIZENSHIP? And this time citizens are not going to let corrupt JOHN ROBERTS pull a fast one and claim that she is eligible for the presidency like he did with Indonesian Barry Soetoro. Demand that Kamala show documentary evidence of her citizenship and those of her parents.” Most conservatives would go along with that as being a reasonable request.
Snopes let the cat sniff it, and it didn’t pass.
They also start with a little bit of the liberal shuffle, rephrasing the allegation to please the cat. “Senator Kamala Harris is not eligible to serve as U.S. President because neither of her parents was ‘a legal resident for 5 years prior to [her] birth’ and she was ‘not raised in the United States.'”
Flat out “False” they rule, based on their investigation of a tweet by Jacob Wohl.
They admit that what the Constitution says is a bit vague. “No person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States, at the time of the adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty five years, and been fourteen Years a resident within the United States.”
Nowhere in the Constitution is the term “natural born citizen” specifically defined. Snopes just pulls some word salad from a legal book to show that when there’s doubt, the first place to look for clarification is English common law. No serious student of the law would stop there though.
Despite Snopes confidential non-analysis, the issue has never been properly settled. Just ask Ted Cruz. The argument raged for months on both sides until everyone came to the conclusion that the Supreme Court has to referee the final match.

The same dilemma applies to Harris. Not only that, the burden of proof is on her. In order to prove she is a natural born citizen she must prove that the Founding Fathers didn’t intend at least one parent to be a citizen before granting “natural born” status on an infant physically born on U.S. Soil.
No matter what Snopes has to say, the possibility is very real that Harris is NOT eligible to hold the office of President.
