Guess who’s out today? On Tuesday President Trump took out Rex Tillerson as secretary of state. CIA Director Mike Pompeo will replace him.
The president tweeted:
Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State. He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!

Trump said he and Pompeo have a “similar thought process.” He acknowledged that he and Tillerson have had disagreements.
Trump said, “We got along actually quite well but we disagreed on things. When you look at the Iran deal, I think it’s terrible… So we were not really thinking the same.”
On Pompeo, Trump said “Tremendous energy. Tremendous intellect. We’re always on the same wave length. The relationship has always been very good. That’s what I need as secretary of state.”
Rumors had been flying about Tillerson’s exit.
Trump’s announcement came as Tillerson just returned from a shortened trip to Africa.
The president decided to make the change ahead of his upcoming meeting with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un.
Apparently, the president wanted to make sure to have his new team in place in advance of the upcoming talks with North Korea and various ongoing trade negotiations.
Trump said in a statement, “I want to thank Rex Tillerson for his service “A great deal has been accomplished over the last fourteen months, and I wish him and his family well.”
Tillerson is unaware of the reason the president is replacing him.
Trump said he is naming Gina Haspel the new director of the CIA. Haspel has served as Pompeo’s deputy and will become the first woman to serve as director.
Haspel said in a statement, “I am grateful to President Trump for the opportunity, and humbled by his confidence in me, to be nominated to be the next Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.”
Republicans on Capitol Hill reacted warmly to the selections.
Arkansas GOP Senator Tom Cotton said, “Mike Pompeo is an outstanding selection as our next Secretary of State. Mike’s deep understanding of world affairs, his clear-eyed view of the threats to our national security, and his key relationships with world leaders make him an excellent choice to be our top diplomat.”
And another one bites the dust…another one bites the dust.
