A disabled Navy veteran was trying to protect a turtle that was being tortured. Two men and a teenager in Florida are behind bars after they attacked the veteran.
In Daytona Beach, Gary Blough said he came upon the group as they were taking the turtle and slamming it down as hard as they could on its shell. Blough asked them to leave the animal alone. He then tried to help the turtle back into the water.
Blough stated, “While I had my head turned, two of them started hitting me in the back of the head and punching me. Next thing I know we’re in a scuffle and I’m fighting three of them at the same time defending myself.”
Johnnie Beveritt and Ryan Ponder are two of the assailants being held.
The group punched and kicked him, leaving him with a severely swollen eye and a bump on the back of his head.
When other people came to see the commotion, the suspects took off. Police later caught up with Johnnie Beveritt, Ryan Ponder and one other person, 16, charging all three with aggravated battery and animal cruelty.
Blough said parts of the turtle shot out of it’s shell and he said it is most likely dead.
Police tried to locate the turtle but it is probable that it sank into the water because it was dead.
Blough’s wife was on the scene and was horrified by what she saw.
Jennifer Blough said, “My husband, who is disabled, tried to save a poor animal’s life and he gets beaten up.”
Ponder and Beveritt are reported to be held on $15,000 bond at the Volusia County Jail. The teen is being held at a juvenile detention facility.
When people find excitement in torturing an animal, think about where they are bound. Will they get tired of torturing animals, which in itself is a horrible deal, and next torture humans?
