Secretary of State Rex Tillerson held a quickly arranged meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin as he worked to ease tensions with the country over Syria and other global crises in Moscow late Wednesday. He and President Trump continued to pressure Putin over his alliance with Bashar Assad.
Tillerson speaking alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during a press conference in Moscow, said he told Putin that U.S.-Russia relations have hit a “low point.” He stressed the need to improve ties.
Tillerson said, “There is a low level of trust between our two countries. The world’s two foremost nuclear powers cannot have this kind of relationship.”
Tensions have risen since Trump ordered a missile strike last week on an airbase controlled by the Assad government. It was ordered in response to a chemical weapons attack.
Lavrov said that the U.S. and Russia have agreed on the need for a United Nations probe of the Syrian chemical attack. This might cool down the conversations between the two nations for now.
Washington blames Russia’s ally Assad for that attack. Moscow on the other hand says Syrian rebels are responsible and adamantly stand by that.
The disagreement was evident Wednesday, as Tillerson stood by U.S. claims that the evidence points to Assad. He clarified that the U.S. has no indications of Russian involvement.
Did Russia know in advance? Did they agree that these people were the enemy?
Think about this: Assad is killing his own people. Who are these people? Why does Assad want them dead? They must be enemies of Assad. If they are his enemies, to our belief, his enemy is ISIS just as ISIS is our enemy and the enemy of Russia. I’m confused. I’m blond, so, I’m allowed to get confused.
